A homeless waif, who knows no name but Brat, happens upon a dung heap and crawls in to spend the night because of its warmth. Jane, the village midwife, sees a chance to use the girl's hunger to her advantage, calls her by the name Beetle, and makes her an apprentice. It's not a soft life; Jane is a hard woman with a sharp glance and a sharper temper. But Beetle secretly watches Jane work and learns some of the skills Jane tries to hide. One day she fails at an important assignment and runs away believing she is too stupid to be of use to anyone. Is she Brat, a know nothing, or is she worthy to be a midwife's apprentice, and someday a midwife?
