Not much has gone right for Stanley Yelnats during his young life. So he isn't too surprised when he is mistakenly convicted of stealing a pair of running shoes and sent to Camp Green Lake, an unusual detention center in the middle of a wasteland, where each day Stanley and the other boys are forced to dig holes exactly five feet wide, and five feet deep. Here Stanley learns valuable lessons about endurance and hard work and meets a fascinating cast of fellow residents.
